Today and every day, we honor the Black innovators and leaders in hair who have shaped the story, experience, and identity of Black hair & beauty–and continue to do so.
At Cécred, we’re inspired by the ancient wisdom and time-honored rituals of textured hair. Our mission is always to combine that tradition with cutting-edge science into our formulas, redefining haircare for all textures and types.
Ahead, we celebrate the trailblazers who disrupted the industry and set new standards in haircare and beyond.
Madame C.J. Walker | Hot Comb Innovation
Madam C.J. Walker, the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S., revolutionized haircare for Black women by adapting the hot comb for textured hair, offering styling versatility and empowerment. She also developed a line of haircare products, including shampoos and treatments, that improved the health and appearance of Black women’s hair, cementing her legacy in beauty and entrepreneurship.

Christina Jenkins developed and patented the ‘hair weave’ in the 1950s. Her technique involved sewing hair extensions onto a foundation of cornrowed natural hair using a special weaving thread and needle, unlike earlier techniques that relied on pins or glue. Thanks to her, we now use this technique for secure, laid protective styles.

Lyda D. Newman | Hairbrush Innovation
At just 13 years old, Lyda D. Newman patented a revolutionary hairbrush in 1898 that featured durable synthetic bristles and a removable compartment, making it easier to detangle, distribute natural oils, and clean; these innovations set the foundation for modern hairbrushes. Her invention not only improved daily haircare but also contributed to the evolution of Black beauty tools.

Willie Morrow is credited with popularizing the modern afro pick with a long handle and wide teeth in the 1970s. This tool became a cultural icon and practical styling essential for Afro-textured hair.

Dr. Kari Williams | Goddess Locs
Dr. Kari Williams, Trichologist and Cécred’s Director of Education, invented the Goddess Locs technique, which blends protective styling with elegance. This style has become a favorite for those looking to protect and style their natural hair.

These innovators didn’t just change haircare; they reshaped culture and challenged industry norms. At Cécred, we honor their legacy by breaking barriers and pioneering haircare that goes beyond hair type, focusing on true nourishment, strength, and moisture for all.
