Cécred: What's your favorite part about being a dad?
Joe: There are many things that I enjoy, but seeing my kids smile is my favorite part. No matter how tired or busy I am, seeing the joy on their little faces make it all worth it. The hugs and kisses are a close second!
Cécred: What's your first hair-related memory with your kid(s)?
Joe: It’s not my first hair-related memory with my kids, but this is my favorite one. My daughter who was 1 year old at the time received her first haircut from her brother who was 4 years old at the time. My wife and I found strands of hair on the couch, and when we asked the kids where the hair came from, my son was so proud to tell us that he cut his sister’s hair with his arts and crafts scissors.

Cécred: Your favorite piece of advice from your dad?
Dr. Kari: My dad always reminds me to bask in the glory of my successes as they’re happening. Cécred: Your favorite piece of advice from your dad?
Alicia: The best advice I've learned from my dad is to go the extra mile. He's exemplified this in every way throughout my life.
- He didn't bring a chair to sit at my soccer games, he brought a canopy, space heater if it was cold, water spritzers if it was hot, variety of blankets, special half-time snacks, and a wagon to pull me in (LOL).
- We didn't use a boxed race car for the pinewood derby - he called a metal specialist to determine the optimal axle friction (don't ask em what that is), he enlisted a friend's workshop to create the perfect derby car by all metrics, put up a full size track to do test runs & no-surprise, we won the state pinewood derby.
- I didn't turn in any rinky dink diorama boxes for middle school projects, we had moving objects and special effects.
- I wasn't cutting up foam for my middle school state puzzle, we brought out a laser for accuracy in shape and fit.
While the above examples might feel a little ~extra~ that's just our style and having these experiences as a child have shaped how I go about life. I'd go as far to say this sliver of advice pushed my success through both grad school at Columbia and my career trajectory to date - I go the extra mile and I can thank my dad for giving me that instinct.

Ruth: One piece of advice from my dad stands out above all else: “Face every challenge with courage, but don’t be afraid to lean on the people who love you.”
When my dad was diagnosed with cancer, he embodied this principle every single day. He faced treatments head-on with unwavering optimism but also leaned into the strength of our family. That simple lesson of balancing bravery with vulnerability has changed the way I approach my own challenges. It’s taught me that leaning on your loved ones isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a testament to the bonds that truly matter.

Cécred: Your favorite hair ritual to do with your dad?
Ruth: One of my favorite rituals with my dad has always been hair care. It may seem small to some, but during his remission, supporting my dad by helping with self-care routines like grooming and scalp massages brought much joy to both of us. It was less about the ritual itself and more about the time spent together, talking, laughing, and being there for each other. Self-care became our way of expressing love and care for one another when words sometimes fell short.
