The relationship you hold with your hair is Cécred. Introducing Portraits of a Hair Story by Cécred.
What’s your red hair origin story?
"I was inspired by this artist when I was, like, six years old, and my mom played their album into the ground, and it just felt like me. It was eccentric, it was quirky, it was otherworldly. And I love the way that she wore her hair. And having that red just felt like such a brazen choice. It felt like such a statement and it left an imprint on me. And I said to myself, 'I'm going to be a redhead one day like her.'”
How does your natural hair texture make you feel?
“I had the strength and resilience that I have because of women and my hair, especially being natural, which to me is embracing my African-ness. My hair is resilience. It is power. It is remembering. My hair reminds me of my strength. Even the color that I've chosen. It's so many things. I think when we think of red, we think of love.”
How does your hair show up on different days?
"I feel like even on a bad hair day, my hair empowers me, reminds me, and says the things that I might not be able to say on that day. My hair always looks good. I feel like it always looks good to me. Even when it's not at its best. It is my art, and it's my medium, and I allow it to be what it wants to be on any given day."
